Car Maintenance Guide for Ugandan Roads
Dust, potholes, heat and heavy rain make maintenance more important in Uganda. Use this checklist to keep your car reliable.
Every week
Check tyre pressure, engine oil level, coolant and battery terminals. Make sure all lights work.
Every 5,000 km
Change engine oil and the oil filter. On dusty roads, inspect the air filter and clean or replace it earlier than the book says.
Every 10,000-20,000 km
Check brake pads and discs, rotate tyres, inspect suspension bushes and ball joints (rough roads wear them quickly), and test the battery and alternator.
Every 40,000 km
Replace spark plugs, fuel filter and gearbox oil as the manufacturer recommends, and flush the coolant.
After rainy season or flooding
Check wiring, connectors and earths for moisture and corrosion. Water in connectors is a common cause of sensor faults and warning lights.
Warning signs not to ignore
Grinding brakes, steering pulling to one side, overheating, oil or fuel smell and new warning lights.
