Automatic Gear Selector Explained: P, R, N, D, L, 2, 3
An automatic car has a few simple positions. Using them correctly protects your gearbox and keeps you safe.

What each position does
- P (Park): locks the transmission when parked.
- R (Reverse): moves the car backward.
- N (Neutral): no power to the wheels.
- D (Drive): normal forward driving with automatic shifts.
- L (Low): more power and engine braking for steep hills.
- 2 / 3: limit the highest gear, useful on slopes.
Good habits
- Press the brake pedal before moving the selector out of P.
- Come to a complete stop before shifting between D and R.
- On slopes, apply the handbrake first, then shift to P.
- Use L or 2 on long downhill roads to save the brakes.
โ ๏ธ Never shift into P or R while moving, and do not coast downhill in N.
