What to Do If Your Car Won't Start

A car that will not start usually gives a clue. Listen to what happens when you turn the key.

1. Nothing happens, no lights

The battery is probably flat or a terminal is loose. Check the battery clamps are tight and not covered in white or green powder. Clean and tighten them.

2. Fast clicking sound

The battery is too weak to turn the engine. Try a jump start (see the links below) or have the battery tested.

3. Engine turns but won't start

The battery is fine, so look at fuel and spark. Is there fuel in the tank? Does the fuel pump hum when you switch on? Faulty coils, sensors or a blocked filter are common causes.

4. Single loud click, then nothing

This often points to a bad starter motor or poor connection to the starter.

5. Starts, then dies

Could be a dirty idle valve, air leak, fuel pump problem or crank sensor fault.

โš ๏ธ Safety: Never smoke or use a flame near the engine. Do not keep cranking for more than 10 seconds at a time because it can overheat the starter. If you smell fuel, stop and call a mechanic.

Quick checklist

  1. Gear in Park/Neutral and brake pressed.
  2. Check battery terminals.
  3. Check fuel level.
  4. Try a jump start with an experienced helper.
  5. If it still fails, do not keep trying; get it diagnosed.
