Engine Overheating: Causes, Coolant Care and What to Do
An overheating engine can destroy itself in minutes. Act at the first sign.

What to do
- Switch off the air conditioner and turn the heater to full hot to move heat away from the engine.
- Pull over safely and switch off the engine.
- Wait at least 30 minutes for it to cool.
- Check the coolant level in the reservoir and top up with coolant or clean water.
- If it overheats again, do not drive. Call a mechanic.

โ ๏ธ Safety: Never open a hot radiator cap. Hot steam and coolant can cause serious burns.
Common causes
- Low coolant or a leak.
- Failed thermostat or water pump.
- Broken drive belt or cooling fan.
- Blocked radiator.
- Head gasket failure.
Check your coolant
Clean coolant is bright and clear (green, pink or blue depending on type). Brown, oily or rusty coolant needs flushing.

Change coolant about every two years, or as the manual says, and fix leaks early.
